A Haiku of a Still Mind: Continuum · Consciousness · Coherence Solo Exhibition by Satish Gupta Presented by Devin Gawarvala
A Haiku of a Still Mind: Continuum · Consciousness · Coherence is a solo exhibition by renowned contemporary artist Satish Gupta, presented by Devin Gawarvala at Bespoke Art Gallery, Ahmedabad. Drawing from more than five decades of artistic practice, the exhibition unfolds as a space of quiet intensity where stillness is not passive, but deeply attentive, and repetition becomes an act of mindful presence.
Rooted in discipline and sustained inquiry, Gupta’s practice has evolved through years of engagement with Zen philosophy, mysticism, and Indian cultural thought. Working across materials such as paint, ink, copper, gold, and text, his works allow multiple temporalities to coexist, the past, present, and future held in careful balance. Reduction and repetition are central to his method, not as aesthetic choices, but as ways of refining attention and removing excess to arrive at clarity.
The exhibition title draws inspiration from the spirit of a haiku rather than its literary structure. Like the poem, the works are shaped by restraint, concentration, and precision. What appears minimal is the result of long preparation and repeated effort. Stillness here functions as a heightened state of awareness, shaping the rhythm, coherence, and inner logic of Gupta’s visual language.

Moving fluidly between abstraction and figuration, the works shift in scale and sensibility from the intimacy of the human body to the vastness of the cosmos. Surfaces carry the quiet memory of time through touch, patina, and mark-making, while space is carefully composed to allow meaning to emerge gradually rather than immediately.
Satish Gupta is widely recognised as one of India’s most versatile and celebrated artists, with a multidisciplinary practice spanning painting, sculpture, calligraphy, poetry, and large-scale public works. A recipient of the prestigious Sanskriti Award early in his career, his work has been presented in over fifty solo exhibitions across major art centres in India and internationally. Landmark projects such as Wings of Eternity, presented at the Royal Opera House, Mumbai, and large-scale site-specific works engaging performance, calligraphy, and music, reflect his long-standing commitment to expanding the boundaries of artistic expression.

A Haiku of a Still Mind invites viewers to slow down and engage with attention as a way of seeing and knowing. The exhibition aligns with Bespoke Art Gallery’s curatorial vision of presenting practices grounded in perception, materiality, and contemplative experience, offering a sustained encounter with art that unfolds through time rather than spectacle.
