From Urban Grids to Cosmic Energies: Vasant Dora Explores the Finite and Infinite in ‘Aaveg’

Curated by Jyoti A Kathpalia, the solo exhibition at India Habitat Centre brings together Habitat Scapes and Samsara, tracing Dora’s journey from architecture and inhabited spaces to spirituality, energy and the eternal cycle of existence.

Vasant Dora’s solo exhibition, Aaveg: Between the Finite and the Infinite, curated by Jyoti A Kathpalia, brings into view the momentum and passion that bind the finite to the infinite. The exhibition begins with the Habitat Scapes, a series that foregrounds the built urban world – finite, and moves towards the Samsara, the eternal cycle of existence, drawing upon the elemental forces and energies of Shiva and Shakti, purusha and prakriti. It is this dialectic between the matter and energy, the built and the felt, that Dora explores with vigour, intensity and fearless passion.

Born in Jamshedpur, in present-day Jharkhand, Vasant Dora trained at the Chandigarh College of Architecture and earned his master’s degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo, New York. He began his career in Chicago before returning to India, where he established and ran his own architectural consultancy for almost four decades. His interest in design, space, and functional aesthetics also drew him into the purely imaginative world of art, which has remained a sustaining passion. Dora was introduced to the art world by his father, an artist, from whom he inherited and developed his creative impulse.

The exhibition presents two series, Habitat Scapes and Samsara. Habitat Scapes represents Dora’s artistic response to the urbanism, to the built, inhabited worlds of cities and dwellings. From there, his series flows into the theatre of samsara, cycle of worldly existence.

In Dora’s art, architecture is not merely a purist, physical construct, far exceeding it and becoming a space in which human life, with its spiritual yearnings and tremendous driving forces is lived and experienced.

Vasant Dora remarks: “I present two works in dialogue with each other. How can one separate the lived from the spiritual, or the habitat from the samsara. I have attempted to express the human condition both as matter and also as a surge of energies, emotions and forces. Our existence encompasses rational structure as well as a tumultuous rush of emotion, that are a part of our existence, and that is the essence of this exhibition.”

Curator Jyoti A Kathpalia remarks, “This exhibition is unique, for it carries traces of Dora the architect as well as Dora the thinker, poet, and spiritualist. It is not often that one encounters art in which all of these qualities come together. This convergence gives Dora’s work its soft grids, as well as flaming colours and poetic force. Dora’s    art has hints of urban grids, the poetry of Khalil Gibran the accents of Bhupen Hazarika and the labour of human civilisation.
