“What is Love – A Journey to Find the Self” is a deeply moving and powerful art and healing initiative led by Prabhat – Society for Child Development and conceptualised by Dr. Madhumita Puri.
The initiative brings together the artistic journeys of 15 young women with intellectual disabilities living in lifelong shelter care. Over a five-month creative engagement, the participants explored the profound question, “What is Love?” , discovering their own voice, emotions, and memories through artistic expression.
Many of the participants, some of whom are also hearing impaired, engaged with art as a means to communicate feelings that are often difficult to articulate. Through this journey, they created deeply personal works that reflect their inner worlds in unique and meaningful ways.
They were guided and supported by artists Suparna Arora (Ceramics), Shalini Dutt (Textiles), and Sujata Das (Painting), who conducted regular sessions in a safe and nurturing environment where art became a language beyond words. Working with mediums such as clay, textiles, painting, sound, and collaborative installations, the participants expressed reflections of comfort, belonging, memory, and hope.

Some shaped clay into symbolic forms, others created intricate textile pieces and vibrant paintings—each work quietly narrating stories of resilience, identity, and emotion. More than a creative exercise, the initiative evolved into a space of healing, connection, and dignity, where participants could reclaim their sense of self and express emotions often left unheard.
Through this journey, the initiative highlights the importance of inclusion, understanding, and appreciation of diverse abilities. It serves as a reminder that creativity has no limits and that every voice, regardless of circumstance, deserves to be seen and heard.

At its core, “What is Love – A Journey to Find the Self” encourages society to pause and reflect on empathy and human connection, expanding our understanding of love beyond conventional definitions. It underscores the role of art as a powerful tool for expression, healing, and social change.
